Everything You Need to Know about Being a Small Group Leader

Posted on

Do you want to have an impact on the lives of today’s youth and have a little fun at the same time? Small Group Leaders (SGLs) are a very special group of volunteers that help facilitate faithful conversation and community growth at Montreat Youth Conference and Middle School Conference. Because Small Groups are so integral to the Montreat experience, this opportunity might seem a little intimidating. But rest assured, being a Small Group Leader is not only a lot easier than it looks; it is also an extremely rewarding, life-giving experience. Keep reading to see how easy it is to get involved and to find out how you can make a difference!

You Don’t Need to be an Expert on Youth Ministry

This opportunity isn’t open solely to church professionals or biblical scholars. We look for a range of volunteers who are ready to help youth embrace their calling as Christians. Specifically, as a Small Group Leader, you need to be able to nurture youth, support them, and give them a safe space to voice their opinions during the conference. We imagine that you might already be doing this for other young people in your life! If selected to serve as a Small Group Leader, you would be there to guide youth as they make new friends, explore the conference theme, and deepen their faith.

It should be noted that we don’t expect you to do this all on your own! In preparation for a time of service, all SGLs participate in training sessions (some of which take place on Zoom). Once the conference begins, we host daily devotionals and check-ins where conference leadership can offer support and guidance. And of course, there is the Small Group Leader Manual! Activities and discussion topics for each session you lead are planned out and clearly defined in this resource. If you’re feeling nervous, just play it by the book!

You Give a Lot, But You Get a Lot, Too

Unlike years past, SGLs are no longer required to volunteer for two consecutive weeks of Montreat Youth Conference. Now, we only ask that you participate for a single week (or for Middle School Conference, five days). This change makes it easier to be involved if you are bringing a group, have children, or work full-time, but you can opt-in for a second week if you want!

Over the course of each conference, SGLs guide youth through two 1.5 hour sessions each day. In your free time, you can explore Montreat or gather with your Back Home Group. We understand that being a Small Group Leader is a big commitment, so in appreciation for all that you do while you are here, Montreat covers all housing, meals, and travel expenses for SGLs.1 We also cover the costs for your dependent children to attend our Clubs or childcare programs so that they are engaged while you participate in the conference.2

Think you might be interested in participating? Then, submit your application today! The form can be found on our website by clicking here. Please note that a reference from a pastor, church educator, or presbytery executive is required as part of your application. Your application will not be considered complete until we receive their reference.

The priority deadline for applications is February 23, 2026. All applications received after the priority deadline will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Apply soon for top consideration!
